FRIULI

FRIULI

Framed by the shimmering Adriatic Sea and the rugged slopes of the Julian Alps, Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy’s northeast is a land of striking contrasts and cultural fusion. Bordering Slovenia, the region blends Mediterranean and Central European influences, creating a distinctive wine identity celebrated worldwide.

Friuli’s wine culture is rooted in both indigenous and international grape varieties. Local stars include Friulano (formerly Tocai Friulano), Ribolla Gialla, and Malvasia Istriana. These coexist with globally recognized grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay, which achieve remarkable finesse in Friuli’s unique environment.

The region benefits from a perfect balance of Alpine and maritime influences. Cooling mountain air preserves freshness and acidity, while gentle sea breezes ensure a long, even growing season. Its renowned “ponca” soils—a mix of marl and sandstone—impart minerality, structure, and depth to the wines.

Friuli’s whites are its hallmark: vibrant, elegant, and aromatic, often displaying notes of green apple, pear, citrus, white blossoms, and almond, with a subtle saline character. Skin-contact wines, particularly from Ribolla Gialla, offer added texture and complexity, revealing layers of dried fruit, honey, and gentle tannins.

Though best known for whites, the region also produces characterful reds from varieties like Refosco and Schioppettino, which bring spice, dark berry flavours, and lively acidity.

In Friuli, the emphasis is on clarity, balance, and expression of terroir—resulting in wines that are precise, food-friendly, and deeply reflective of their origin.
